What rights was the person denied?
Sojourner was a slave meaning that she was held against her will to work for people she didn’t want to for any money at all. She was also forced to marry men she didn’t want to. Another one her rights that was violated was that she was sexually abused by many of her owners, and she could not do anything about it.

The character of my story is Sojourner Truth


What happened during the event?
She worked as a slave in New York and an emancipation law of slavery in the state started to come into effect years earlier but she still wasn’t released. Her slave owner at the time promised Sojourner to release her, "if she would do well and be faithful." Sojourner had a hand injury and her owner changed his mind because he claimed that she was less productive because of the injury. She was very upset by this. She continued working until she felt she did her work by spinning 100 pounds of wool for him.

How did this character react?
She felt as if she had done him enough work and she fled to freedom with her daughter.

How did they survive?
She then moved to the home of Isaac and Maria Van Wagener, who took her and her baby in. They lived there until the emancipation act fully in effect and all the slaves were freed in New York.

In the story Sojourner will be using a variety of tones. It is sad that she was abused, held against her will, and she had very little hope. During those times the voice will be very hopeless and sad. At times when she escaped or something happy occurred, she will be happy and upbeat. Using a variety of tones will give the full effect of how she felt during her time as a slave.
